Mayor Adams takes aim at City Council’s nearly $600M fund as NYC braces for

Next on the chopping block: The City Council’s pork barrel!

At least if Eric Adams has a say.

The New York mayor is taking aim at the Democratic-majority City Council’s nearly $600 million in discretionary funds as a way to help offset the Big Apple’s financial woes — which are expected to worsen thanks to the growing migrant crisis.

Hizzoner revealed in an exclusive interview with The Post editorial board on Tuesday that he wants his across-the-board belt-tightening measures spurred by the migrant crisis to be felt in the district-specific spending of all 51 council members.

Adams said he sent a missive Tuesday to Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, a fellow Democrat, directing her to notify all councilmembers that he wants them to swallow a 50% slash to their total $563 million in pork-barrel funding – an appropriation councilmembers use to dole out taxpayer dollars to nonprofits and other organizations in their districts.

“We sent out a letter today to the Speaker, asking the City Council members to take a 50% cut in their discretionary dollars, because many of them are, you know, talking about what we need to be doing to help the migrant seekers – so they need to help also,” Adams said.

“Let’s not spend other people’s money – so we need them to take a 50% cut in the end of the year so we can contribute and throw the money in a pot.”

Despite the declaration, Adams does not have unilateral control over the council’s budget, as the legislative branch sets its own financial blueprint.

The ask comes on the heels of the council’s two-days worth of hearings focused on the migrant crisis — where members grilled City Hall officials about expenses, including the now defunct Randalls Island mega-shelter tents.

Council members already oppose several cuts directed by the city’s Office of Management and Budget, including slashing agency budgets and eliminating vacant positions across city departments.

A rep for Speaker Adams blamed Hizzoner for “starving” city agencies — referencing the prior cuts.

“The council has received no such letter from the administration. It’s disappointing that the mayor’s word on a budget agreement seems to have decreasing value and he is attempting to renegotiate via the New York Post editorial board,” said the spokesperson.

“At today’s hearing, the council heard from numerous non-profit organizations filling the gaps of essential work for New Yorkers and asylum seekers in our communities without reimbursement from this administration — these are the recipients of council funding.

“The mayor is starving city agencies of staff and resources, leaving nonprofits to fill the gap without his support, and now he wants to take funding away from these non-profit service providers. When the mayor is…
