Remembering Frances Magee – CHPC New York

On Sunday, January 1, 2023, long-time emeritus board member, Frances Magee passed away peacefully in her sleep after a brief illness. She was 93 years old.

Franny was devoted to CHPC for over 60 years. She was an architect whose strong interest in city planning and advocacy for affordable housing brought her to our organization. Beginning as a financial supporter and volunteer, she went on to become our President; often serving as a valuable sparring partner for Roger Starr. Following her time as President, Frances stayed on CHPC’s board, moving to emeritus in her later years. She was committed to giving us financial support each year–which over six decades makes her one of the most influential contributors to CHPC in our history.

When Jerilyn Perine became Executive Director, Franny was a critical resource in conveying CHPC’s mission and history. According to Jerilyn – “She was an architect when women had no place in the field, a leader and manager when women of her class were not expected to work but were encouraged to ‘volunteer’ instead. She was committed to her husband and family and loved the diversity, culture, and possibilities that NYC represented. She was a match for Roger Star rand wasn’t shy about sharing her opinions and loved the collaboration that CHPC offered. Her commitment and generosity towards CHPC was unmatched and she helped us during the difficult times when we had to rebuild the organization. She should always be remembered.”

Alongside her leadership at CHPC, Frances also served as a director of the Abelard Foundation and was a long-term trustee of Old Sturbridge Village, the living museum in Southbridge, MA.

Frances’ full obituary can be accessed here. A memorial service will be planned to take place in spring 2023. Contributions in her name may be made to Old Sturbridge Village.
