Transit workers demand NYC to improve working conditions amid spike in violence

New York City transit workers marched in Brooklyn Tuesday to demand safer working conditions amid a spike in violent assaults on public transit.

MTA workers marched down Fulton Street, saying they do not feel safe coming to work. To help combat attacks, they are asking for bulletproof bus and train operator cockpits.

Two transit workers who have been employed for nearly two decades tell News 12 the environment aboard buses and trains has gotten out of control.

“Enough is enough. It is time to do something when we have – every day – members coming to us telling us how fearful they are. It’s time to take action,” says Clarence Batterso, the Grand Avenue Depot Bus chairman.

East New York bus operator Hester Frances adds, “If we get assaulted, they don’t get caught. And if they do get caught, they don’t get penalized. If they actually got penalized this probably would stop.”
