Wrong-Way Driver Caused Crash That Killed 3-Month-Old In Brooklyn – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A baby girl was killed and her parents were hospitalized in a tragic crash in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the family of three was out for a walk in Clinton Hill when a car slammed into their stroller, CBS2’s Christina Fan reported.

Investigators believe the driver of a grey Honda Civic was going the wrong way on Gates Avenue when it T-boned a car going north on Vanderbilt Avenue. The impact sent one of the cars barreling into the family nearby.

The 3-month-old was ejected from the stroller and killed.

On man helped paramedics communicate in French with her 33-year-old mother, who was critically injured.

“She’s scared, you know? She’s scared. Blood coming out of her head. Her knees are all bruised up,” Mangue Banzima said.

The girl’s 36-year-old father and the 49-year-old driver of the T-boned car were also rushed to a nearby hospital. Police have not released the names of anyone involved.

Witnesses and neighbors ran to the scene when they heard piercing screams.

“We went to the window, and we heard huge screams of, ‘Oh my God!’ And then there’s a woman lying down on the floor,” said Anne Sophie Plume.

Police said both people in the car that caused the crash tried ran from the scene. Officers eventually caught 28-year-old Tyrik Mott, who was apprehended as he allegedly tried to steal another car, CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon reported.

For that, he is facing attempted robbery, attempted grand larceny, and resisting arrest charges. Officials said charges are also pending in relation to the crash that killed the baby girl.

Mott has been arrested at least three other times and has had his license suspended in the past, police said.

Investigators are still looking for the person who was in the car with Mott.

On what is normally a quiet street where the tragedy unfolded, families said they are hoping for the full recovery of the girl’s parents.

“I can’t imagine waking up in the hospital and your first thought has to be where is my baby? I can’t … I can’t,” one mother said.

At the scene of the crash, neighbors started a small memorial, and there was heartache for the baby girl that was killed.

“I honestly feel so devastated. I just started crying and crying,” neighbor Nikki Crook said.
