Cabinet Denies Converting Bread Subsidy into Cash Support
The Egyptian Cabinet denied the news spread on some websites and social media pages regarding the government’s intention to abolish the in-kind subsidy for bread and turn it into cash support, coinciding with the global economic crisis.
The Cabinet’s Media Center contacted the Ministry of Supply, which denied these news, denying to abolish the in-kind subsidy for bread and to turn it into cash support in conjunction with the global economic crisis, according to a statement.
It stressed the continuation of in-kind support for bread as it is without any change in the system, as subsidized bread is disbursed to citizens on ration cards at the rate of 5 loaves per day for each individual at a rate of 150 loaves for the citizen per month.
The statement noted that the loaves that are provided on the card during the month are calculated with accumulated points, provided that the ration card holders spend the difference of bread points in the form of food and non-food commodities from the various supply outlets.
