Inflation reduction is mandate for Shadow Cabinet MP Mazier – PortageOnline.com

A member of the shadow cabinet for the Conservative Party in Ottawa is investigating inflation and how rural Canadians are affected.

Dauphin, Swan River, Neepawa MP Dan Mazier explains he recalls when an unnecessary play with interest rates occurred in the 80s, and it’s being repeated today.

“At the age when I was just growing up, I graduated from university and first got married in 1985,” continues Mazier. “I saw the 28 per cent interest rates and we bought our first house. I didn’t realize at that time — I was 20-ish — it was all play. The most frustrating thing about this is that we saw it already being replayed here in the last couple of years. With the government right now, Trudeau can basically reduce the taxes, especially on home heating.”

Mazier explains heating is something that’s quite easy to pause before winter. He notes tax on groceries should likewise be addressed as well as the effect carbon tax is having on transportation.

“That is just fueling more inflation and it’s disproportionate to rural people, as well,” says Mazier. “Trying to explain that to a government that’s very urban-focused is very important. I really appreciate our leader noticing that the rural voice needs to be at the table. This is good for, I think, everybody — for our caucus, and then also for Canadians, to get that rural voice in there and really focus on what needs to be adjusted.”

Mazier says if those efforts are made, taxes that are causing all of the inflationary pressure will be removed.
