European and Hong Kong racers to hit Grand Prix circuit as Motorcycle Grand Prix

Upwards of 170 racers will hit
the circuit of the Macau Grand Prix next month, including European and Hong
Kong contenders, with the Motorcycle Grand Prix to return to one of the city’s flagship
sporting extravaganza after a two-year hiatus.

Sports Bureau President Pun Weng Kun told media today that the long-awaited motorcycling race will make a comeback to the auto-racing contest, which is made up of seven races.

However, the official revealed earlier this year that the Formula 3 World Cup and GT World Cup will be absent from this year’s Grand Prix.

Homegrown racers aside, the 69th edition of the annual event will also welcome drivers from Europe and the neighbouring SAR.

All of them will go through hotel quarantine as instructed by the Health Bureau, said Pun. However, it remains unknown whether their stays in a quarantine hotel will be funded by the government. The head of the Bureau said that they “just wanted more racers to come”.

The motorsport event, one of significant drivers of domestic tourism, is expected to cost MOP180 million (US$22.3 million).
