Mayor Adams scraps Norwegian Cruise ship plan to house migrants

Mayor Eric Adams’ plan to house migrants at a Norwegian Cruise Line ship docked off Staten Island has fizzled because it’s too expensive and the city wants a “cheaper option,” a top City Hall official said Friday.

The Adams administration was close to a final deal with NCL last week, The Post previously reported — but discussions broke down after Norwegian Cruise executives wanted to charge too much.

“They’re probably least likely because we got better deals,” said City Hall chief of staff Frank Carone, who has been engaged in the negotiations with Norwegian Cruise Line.

But City Hall is now in talks with four other companies including Carnival Cruise Line and the Estonian company Tallink & Silja, which was hired by the Estonian government to house Ukrainian refugees who fled their country following Russia’s invasion.

“None of it is close yet,” Carone said.

“Our job is to do what’s best for the safety of the people but also the best cost and most efficient,” he said.

A cruise ship is one of several options the city is looking at to house an influx of migrants arriving in the city at the former naval homeport base in Stapleton, Staten Island.

Over 17,400 migrants have arrived in the Big Apple since April, according to City Hall on Thursday.

Adams said that number could grow to a high of 100,000 individuals and on Friday he declared a state of emergency over the crisis.

A representative for Norwegian Cruise Line did not return an immediate request for comment.
