First Call: Joe Schobert already released; mixed injury news for Ravens; Tyler

In Wednesday’s “First Call,” a former Pittsburgh Steeler is struggling to keep a new job. The Baltimore Ravens are getting mixed results on the injury front. Tyler Glasnow is trying to return.

Joe Schobert didn’t last very long in Denver.

The former Steelers linebacker was only a Bronco for eight days. He was signed in Colorado on Aug. 15 and released Tuesday.

Schobert had 112 tackles in 2021, his only season in Pittsburgh. But he wasn’t close to the kind of impact player the Steelers thought they were getting when they acquired him in a trade with Jacksonville last August.

Schobert is only 28, but he is now five years removed from his 2017 Pro Bowl season with the Cleveland Browns and has been with four teams in four years.

Saw this coming

After a rough performance against the Steelers on Saturday night, the Jacksonville Jaguars released the only kicker on their roster.

That was Ryan Santoso. He was cut loose after going three of six on field goal attempts in the preseason, including two misses of over 50 yards against the Steelers on Saturday.

Jacksonville claimed James McCourt to fill the void at the position. He was cut by the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.

“Consistency is what you look for in kickers. It’ll be a good opportunity for him and then for us to keep going through the process,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said of McCourt via CBS Sports. “We’ve still got a little bit of time here before kicks mean something, but it’ll be a good opportunity for him.”

Back with Baltimore

Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum is practicing with the team once again. This is after returning from a foot injury Aug. 4.

That’s according to the team’s website. Linderbaum is expected to start as a rookie after the Ravens traded up to select him with the 25th overall pick. Many Steelers fans thought he’d be a candidate for the Steelers at pick No. 20, but quarterback Kenny Pickett was still on the board.

The former Iowa Hawkeye did individual work Friday when the Ravens were in Arizona, but BaltimoreRavens.com claims he increased his activity Tuesday.

All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle) and outside linebacker Tyus Bowser (Achilles) were still sidelined Tuesday. Head coach John Harbaugh is targeting two to three weeks of practice before game action.

The Ravens open the regular season against the New York Jets in 19 days.

Comeback kid

Former Pirates pitcher Tyler Glasnow is trying to make a comeback.

The Tampa Bay Rays ace had Tommy John surgery on Aug. 4, 2021. The right-hander made his last appearance June 14, 2021, against the Chicago White Sox.

According to the Associated Press, Glasnow reached 97 miles per hour while throwing his second live batting practice on Tuesday.

He hasn’t ruled out returning this season.
