Jonathan Davis incredible catch against Rays

ST. PETERSBURG — Brewers center fielder Jonathan Davis was removed from Wednesday afternoon’s game after his head slammed into the Tropicana Field wall following a spectacular running, diving second-inning catch that robbed Randy Arozarena of extra bases.

Davis was examined by the team trainer, and an emergency cart was brought onto the field. But Davis initially opted to remain in the game and played during the inning’s final two outs. In the third, he was removed with discomfort in his lower back and ribcage.

Davis backtracked on Arozarena’s line drive, then dived near the warning track and backhanded the ball before his head struck the wall. Davis’ cap flew off, but the ball remained lodged in his glove. As Davis writhed in pain, initially holding his lower back, Arozarena raced around the bases in a moment of confusion, thinking he might have an inside-the-park homer. But the out call was made.

Several of Davis’ teammates sprinted to the center-field area looking to help him. After being examined, Davis waved off the cart and was seen smiling.

Davis batted ninth and struck out in his only plate appearance. When Davis exited, right fielder Tyrone Taylor moved to center and Jace Peterson was inserted in right.
