Placer County marine among 5 killed in aircraft crash in SoCal desert

One of the five marines that were killed in an aircraft crash this week in the California desert has been identified as a 33-year-old from Placer County, the Marine Corps said on Friday.Capt. John Sax was among those killed during a flight training exercise on Wednesday.The MV-22 Osprey went down at 12:25 p.m. during training in a remote area in Imperial County near the community of Glamis, about 115 miles east of San Diego and about 50 miles from Yuma, Arizona. “It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of five Marines from the Purple Fox family,” said Lt. Col. John C. Miller, commanding officer of VMM-364. “This is an extremely difficult time for VMM-364 and it is hard to express the impact that this loss has had on our squadron and its families.”Sax was assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 364 where he served as an MV-22B pilot, the Marine Corps said. He had served in the marines for five years and had received a National Defense Services Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. The other four who died on Wednesday were identified as Cpl. Nathan E. Carlson, 21, of Winnebago, Illinois, Capt. Nicholas P. Losapio, 31, of Rockingham, New Hampshire, Cpl. Seth D. Rasmuson, 21, of Johnson, Wyoming and Lance Cpl. Evan A. Strickland, 19, of Valencia, New Mexico.No other details regarding the crash were provided by the Marine Corps. The cause of the crash is under investigation.The Marines were participating in routine live-fire training over their gunnery range in the Imperial Valley desert, said Marine Maj. Mason Englehart, spokesperson for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.The Osprey, a hybrid airplane and helicopter, flew in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but has been criticized by some as unsafe. It is designed to take off like a helicopter, rotate its propellers to a horizontal position and cruise like an airplane.Versions of the aircraft are flown by the Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
