Two women shot during funeral at Racine cemetery; curfew enforced

Two women were shot Thursday afternoon during a funeral at Graceland Cemetery in Racine, police said. A 35-year-old woman was flown to Froedtert Hospital where she had surgery for her injuries. Police said Friday morning she was awake and alert. A 19-year-old woman was treated at a Racine hospital and released. The funeral home confirmed the shooting happened during the funeral for Da’Shontay King, who was shot and killed by a Racine police officer two weeks ago.”I heard it was mass chaos here. People were running and people were screaming,” said Sgt. Kristi Wilcox, Racine Police PIO. “I know we got multiple 911 calls that people were shot.”The shots were fired at 2:26 p.m., police said.”How many gunshots did you hear?” WISN 12 News’ Matt Smith asked a person nearby. “Accurately, 20 to 30. I would say. It was a lot. The one initial one and then gunfire. It was terrifying,” said Tre Brantley, who heard the shooting. “Within 30 seconds we were all running off the court. we didn’t stop to grab any of our stuff. we didn’t stop to talk about it.””Honestly, it’s sad. It really is,” added Ernie Stickles, Racine resident. “The way Racine was when I was growing up, nobody caused any problems.”Police said Friday that multiple firearms were used in the shooting. Ascension All Saints Hospital is near the cemetery. “The safety of our associates, patients, visitors and providers is our top priority. Due to a situation offsite, increased security measures have been put in place at Ascension All Saints Hospital. Patients are still able to keep previously scheduled appointments and the emergency department is currently accepting patients. However, out of an abundance of caution, the number of open entrances into the hospital has been reduced and additional security screenings have been implemented,” an Ascension Wisconsin spokesperson told WISN 12 News.There was not threat to the building or patients. At 8 p.m., the hospital has resumed normal operations.Thursday night, Mayor Cory Mason announced he would instruct police to enforce the city’s juvenile curfew through the weekend. That ordinance requires anyone under 18 to be home by 11 p.m.”Right now, we’re asking for calm and no retaliation of any kind. This city has seen enough right now,” said Sgt. Wilcox. Gov. Tony Evers tweeted, in part, “We are praying all involved survive and recover. Gun violence has to stop.”Police have not yet released any other information, but are looking for a video of the shooting.
