VP Harris Convenes Cabinet Meeting For Maternal Health

Administration seeking to reduce minority maternal mortality.

Vice President Kamala Harris conducted a meeting last week with Cabinet secretaries and agency leaders to discuss maternal mortality and morbidity in the United States. The meeting occurred as the White House’s administration-wide equity action plan was rolled out. The meeting sought to address why black mothers are 2.9 times more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts.

After the meeting, the White House announced new efforts to address this disparity. One is to work to extend Medicaid’s maternal healthcare benefits to 12 months after pregnancy. A “Birthing-Friendly” designation for hospitals was also proposed to signal a particular location’s commitment to maternal health to help expecting families choose hospitals. The White House has detailed a number of other action items for maternal equity on its website.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for the vice president as she promotes the president’s agenda.
  • For Cabinet secretaries to seek God’s direction in implementing equity strategies.
  • For Administrator Brooks-LaSure as she oversees the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
