Congress Approves Texan-Led Effort to Establish National Monument to Medal of
The Senate passed a bill sponsored by Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX-33) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) that will establish a national monument to “honor the extraordinary acts of valor, selfless service, and sacrifice displayed by Medal of Honor recipients.”
Federal funds will not be used to pay for the monument. Instead, the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation, based in Arlington, Texas, will collect donations to pay the costs.
“The creation of the Monument in Washington, D.C., will complement the future National Medal of Honor Museum, to break ground in Arlington, TX early next year,” the foundation stated.
The late Congressman Ron Wright (R-TX-06) carried a similar proposal with Veasey in 2019. Their bill would also have recognized Arlington, Texas as the home of the National Medal of Honor Museum.
When Cornyn introduced the current bill, he gave a nod to Texan recipient Audie Murphy and the museum foundation.
“An homage to America’s Medal of Honor recipients in our nation’s capital will remind visitors and residents alike of what it means to put your country first,” Cornyn stated.
“The selfless servicemembers who have earned the Medal of Honor — like the fabled Patrick Brady and Audie Murphy, to name a few — deserve our utmost respect and recognition, and I’m pleased the project will be in the capable hands of the Foundation based here in Arlington, Texas.”
The bill is on the way to President Joe Biden’s desk.
“I am so proud that my bipartisan Medal of Honor legislation will be signed into law by President Biden,” Veasey said.
“This legislation honors the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women who risked their lives to protect our country.”
The museum, which will sit in Veasey’s district, is set to open its doors in 2024. It will sit near other Arlington entertainment attractions like Six Flags, AT&T Stadium, and Globe Life Field.
