Stan Verrett lays into Doug Gottlieb over Travis Hunter controversy

Travis Hunter, the top recruit in the nation, spurning Florida State at the altar for Deion Sanders’ team at HBCU school Jackson State has the sports world at the edge of our seats.

On any story like this there will invariably be a wide spectrum of opinions. People who favor the dismantlement of longstanding structures in college athletics vocally support the disruption. Doug Gottlieb, a Fox Sports Radio host and a contrarian traditionalist compared to most of the sports media on NCAA matters, sounded the alarm and wound up in a tiff with ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Stan Verrett.

“Twitter celebrating a kid making an obvious mistake is hilarious,” Gottlieb wrote on Twitter about Hunter’s flip.

Digital video host Roland Martin responded about Gottlieb’s “arrogance” and asked him to explain why going to a team in Jackson State that finished 11-1 this season would be worse for Hunter than playing at Florida State, which is coming off a 5-7 campaign.

“HBCU football doesn’t have close to the same support athletically, academically, medically and they play an inferior schedule w/inferior teammates,” Gottlieb answered. “(In) addition of football ends, any person would prefer to be a UGA, FSU, Texas A&M alum for help in the workforce.”

Verrett quoted the portion about employment futures, and said of Gottlieb, “He obviously, and predictably, has NO IDEA about the incredible, disproportionate success of black HBCU grads as a percentage of professionals in nearly every field. Ignorant, but opinionated. Bad combo.”

“He should research black pharmacists from Xavier, black nurses from Dillard, business pros from FAMU, doctors from Morehouse and Meharry, engineers from Southern, phenomenal women in all areas from Spelman, and US VPs from Howard and learn something.”

Gottlieb did not respond to Verrett, but kept arguing with Roland Martin.

“If you think Jackson State is the Harvard of Mississippi, go for it,” Gottlieb tweeted to Martin. “I’m gonna tell you that for every purpose outside of hanging w/Deion the Big Boy schools are a smarter, safer spot with far great opportunities in the future to win big which helps their brand & earnings.”

Martin referred Gottlieb to a tweet from former Eagles great Hugh Douglas about succeeding in the NFL after playing football at the HBCU Central State University.

“I’m not sure what you think you are accomplishing,” Gottlieb responded. “Do you think I don’t know HBCUs have produced players and alums that have been awesome? The idea is that a top recruit who can go anywhere, should go to…
