Is parental rage key to Republican control of Congress in 2022?

Glenn Youngkin’s victory, using parent outrage over education as a central theme, has given Republicans nationwide a potent campaign issue.

A campaign sign for Virginia governor-elect Glenn Youngkin was still on display on a dirt road in Waterford, Virginia, on Nov. 21. Loudon County, Virginia, exemplifies the rapidly-changing suburbs of the United States, and had an election in 2021 that may shed some light on what suburban and exurban voters may be thinking heading into the 2022 midterms.
  • The debate over education and race is shaping up to a main theme of the 2022 midterm elections.
  • Loudoun County parents have fiercely debated race in school curriculum, a key factor in the Virginia governor’s race.
  • Ever since Glenn Youngkin won, Republicans across the U.S. have tried to capitalize on the education debate.

LEESBURG, Va. – Ronda Nassib recently found herself among fed-up parents wanting to know how she and a small band of Northern Virginia activists took on the local school board and helped spark a movement that turned Virginia from blue to red last month.

The parents had trekked from suburban communities in Arizona, Texas, Florida and other parts of the country to a Washington, D.C. retreat in part to hear Nassib and other Fight For Schools members from nearby Loudoun County, Virginia. They wanted to know how to channel parent outrage over critical race theory (CRT), curriculum, and COVID mandates into political action – just like the momentum that helped propel GOP businessman Glenn Youngkin into the Virginia governor’s mansion.
