Batman: Caped Crusader BTS Video Debuts at DC FanDome

J.J. Abrams, Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves and James Tucker discuss the upcoming cartoon Batman: Caped Crusader in a video from DC FanDome.

A behind-the-scenes interview video for Batman: Caped Crusader, coming to HBO Max and Cartoon Network in 2023, was released as part of the 2021 DC FanDome event.

The clip features interviews with executive producers J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: Episode VII and Episode IX), Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and Matt Reeves (The Batman) and co-producer James Tucker (Batman: The Brave and the Bold), offering impressions of what the show will eventually look like. Unfortunately for eager fans, the video doesn’t contain any footage from the new animated series, nor any artwork from the show beyond the previously released poster.

Timm described Batman: Caped Crusader as being “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series,” saying that this new show will be free from the content restrictions Timm’s classic 1992-95 cartoon had to deal with on Saturday mornings. The other major difference between Batman: The Animated Series and Batman: Caped Crusader is that, where the former presented a relatively established Batman, the latter follows the lead of Reeves’ The Batman in presenting a younger Batman who hasn’t quite earned the trust of Commissioner Gordon yet and is still developing his relationships with future allies and enemies. Tucker noted that Batman will begin the series very low tech but will develop gadgets and different iterations of the Batmobile over the course of the series.
